• Bird or squirrel activity at the flue top. The ¾-inch mesh on HeatShield caps is specifically sized to exclude animals while allowing smoke passage. Bent or missing mesh means the cap has suffered impact damage or corrosion failure.
• Soot buildup on the cap exterior. This indicates poor draft, often caused by a cap that’s too restrictive for the flue diameter. HeatShield’s wind-directional models can actually improve draft, but only if matched correctly to the appliance below.
