Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactured chimney caps, dampers, and venting hardware under several product lines, but their crown-forming systems were most common on their multi-flue chimney cap installations from the 1990s through the mid-2000s. If your cap has a Famco label or stamp, check the underside of the crown for a model prefix, usually starting with “FC-” or “MFC-” for their multi-flue series. The critical measurement is the crown overhang, which should extend at least 2 inches past the chimney wall on all sides. Famco’s standard crowns ran 24 to 36 inches in width, with custom orders up to 48 inches for larger Fairfield homes.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks running across the crown surface. These start small but widen each winter as water freezes and expands inside the concrete. In Fairfield’s climate, a crack visible in October becomes a channel for water by January.
• Pieces of concrete flaking off the crown edge. This is spalling, and it means the crown’s top surface has lost its integrity. Once the protective layer is gone, the underlying concrete deteriorates rapidly.
• Rust stains on the chimney brick below the crown. Water is getting past the crown and running down the flue interior, carrying rust from the damper or firebox grate with it. The crown is no longer shedding water outward.
• The crown has separated from the flue tile. A proper crown should seal tight around the flue with an expansion joint. If you can slide a putty knife between crown and tile, exhaust gases and moisture are escaping into the chimney structure.
• Visible sagging or pooling on the crown top. A crown should slope away from the flue at least 1/4 inch per foot. Flat or sunken areas hold water, and in Fairfield’s freeze-thaw environment, that water wins every time.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check for crown cracks from the ground with binoculars, or from a sturdy ladder if they’re comfortable at height. What you cannot safely do is work on a chimney crown from the roof edge. The crown overhang puts you at the roof’s highest point, often on a slope, and the repair itself involves mixing and troweling concrete at elevation. Falls from roof level are the leading cause of serious injury in home maintenance.

We don’t recommend DIY crown repair. The concrete mix matters, the slope matters, and the bond to existing masonry matters. A patch that looks fine in September fails by March.
