DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement: The Fairfield Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex flue liner replacement in Fairfield typically runs $2,800-$5,200 installed, depending on chimney height, diameter, and whether the existing liner pulls out clean or needs cutting. We stock DuraFlex-compatible liners in 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-inch diameters on our trucks, and most Fairfield replacements are completed in a single day. Russell Haines and our crew have pulled failed liners from homes across Greenfield Hill, Stratfield, and the beach cottages near Southport where salt air accelerates corrosion faster than inland Fairfield County.

Most owners discover the problem during a routine sweep or when they notice a thin, metallic rattling on windy days, water staining the firebox after rain, or a faint smoke smell in upstairs rooms. The liner has either cracked from thermal cycling, corroded through at the flue collar, or separated at a joint where creosote packed and overheated the seam.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex produces two distinct product lines, and matching the wrong one is a costly mistake. The DuraFlex SW (stainless wall) is the standard 316Ti stainless liner with .006-inch wall thickness, rated for wood, pellet, and oil appliances. The DuraFlex HT (high temperature) uses .012-inch 316Ti for coal and heavy oil, and carries a higher temperature rating. Both come in flexible lengths from 10 to 35 feet, with diameters from 3 to 6 inches in half-inch increments.

To identify yours, look for the etched band 6-12 inches from the top termination, stamped with “DuraFlex” and the diameter. If the band is corroded off, measure the inner diameter with a tape, not the outer, since insulation wraps can add 3/8 inch. We also carry quality aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney that meet the same 316Ti spec and UL 1777 listing. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex. For Fairfield’s older homes with offset flues, we sometimes spec Olympia’s equivalent when the bend radius is tighter than DuraFlex’s 4:1 ratio allows.

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox or rust stains on the damper. A breached liner lets condensation from combustion gases reach the masonry shell. In Fairfield’s freeze-thaw climate, that moisture expands and contracts through winter, widening hairline cracks into channels that dump water directly down the flue.
  • Flaking or powdery debris falling from the damper. This is spalling masonry, not liner material, but it signals the liner has been leaking acidic condensate long enough to eat the mortar joints. The liner itself may look intact from below while the upper sections have pinholes you cannot see without a camera.
  • A metallic rattling or clanking during wind. The top termination collar has corroded through or the flex section has detached from the rigid connector. We’ve found this exact failure on DuraFlex installations in Southport where salt-laden air pits the 316Ti at the weld seam within 12-15 years instead of the usual 20.
  • Smoke spillage when opening the stove or fireplace door. The liner may have collapsed inward at a joint, creating an obstruction, or the inner wall has delaminated from the outer, reducing the effective diameter below what the appliance needs to draft properly.
  • Your sweep reports “gaps visible at joints” on inspection. DuraFlex uses a double-lock seam that can work open if the liner was pulled too tight during installation or if a chimney fire overheated the metal. Once the lock separates, creosote packs the gap and creates a hot spot that accelerates failure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Fairfield Price Range
DuraFlex or equivalent 316Ti liner (materials only) $1,400-$2,800
Labor: removal, installation, top and bottom termination $1,200-$2,000
Insulation blanket or pour-in (required by code) $200-$400
Total installed, typical Fairfield chimney $2,800-$5,200

The wide range reflects chimney height, access difficulty, and whether we can pull the old liner intact or must cut it out in sections. A straight 20-foot flue in a ranch with good roof access sits at the low end. A 35-foot run in a three-story Greenfield Hill colonial with a steep pitch and multiple offsets pushes the high end. We quote upfront after a Level-2 camera inspection, photos included. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every liner replacement carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing. If it’s not right, we don’t leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s an honest boundary here. A homeowner can verify the diameter, check the termination cap for visible corrosion, and confirm water in the firebox correlates with recent rain. What you cannot safely do is pull a liner from a two-story chimney without proper anchoring, proper PPE for the creosote exposure, and knowledge of whether your chimney is structurally sound enough to accept the mechanical stress.

We’ve been called to Fairfield homes where a well-meaning owner started the job, discovered the liner was wedged behind a shifted brick, and cracked the flue wall trying to force it. That turns a liner swap into a $4,000+ rebuild. The other risk is less visible: Connecticut code requires UL 1777-listed liner insulation for any new installation, and the permit inspection in Fairfield will fail without documentation. We handle the permit, the inspection scheduling, and the paperwork. Call (475) 251-7537 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before you commit to anything.
