Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust stains on the chimney breast or siding. Copperfield galvanized caps begin rusting at the seams after 7-10 years in Fairfield’s climate. Once the coating fails, water tracks down the flue and stains masonry below. The cap looks fine from the ground, but the underside is already compromised.
• Mesh screen pulled away or clogged solid. Creosote and coastal debris pack the 5/8″ mesh over time. A clogged screen forces smoke back into the house and creates a draft hazard. We’ve found squirrel nests packed so tight the flue was effectively sealed.
• Cap shifted or missing after high winds. The Wind-Resistant series uses heavier gauge steel and angled skirts, but even these fail if installed with the wrong tension bolts. Standard caps on tall chimneys in exposed Fairfield locations need additional strapping that previous installers sometimes skip.
• Water in the firebox or damper rust. This means the cap’s lid is cracked, the seam has separated, or the flue-top seal has failed. Water in the system destroys dampers, rusts fireboxes, and saturates adjacent framing. In older Fairfield homes with unlined chimneys, this is how freeze-thaw damage accelerates.
• Animals or nesting material visible. A proper Copperfield cap has 5/8″ mesh too small for squirrels and birds.
