A Hearthstone company - serving Fairfield, CT

Gelco Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Series 38 direct-vent gas fireplaces: pilot assembly failure. The pilot orifice on early Series 38 units clogs with sulfur residue from Fairfield’s natural gas supply, which runs slightly higher in mercaptan additives than Connecticut’s northern utilities. The symptom is a pilot that lights but won’t hold. We clean the orifice with a proper reamer, never a wire brush that enlarges the bore, and replace the thermopile if millivolt output has dropped below 325 mV. OEM pilot assemblies are available, but we’ve had equal longevity with the Robertshaw aftermarket equivalent at roughly half the parts cost.
  • Gelco wood-burning fireplaces: cracked refractory panels. The refractory panels in Gelco’s masonry-style wood units develop hairline cracks after 8 to 12 seasons of Fairfield’s freeze-thaw cycling, especially in homes near the coast where salt air accelerates thermal stress. A crack under 1/8 inch that doesn’t reach the metal shell can be patched with HeatShield refractory sealant. If the panel is spalling or the crack runs to the edge, we replace with Gelco-specified panels or, when backordered, source matching-density panels from Copperfield that carry the same 1,800°F rating.
  • Gelco fireplace inserts: blower motor bearing wear. The OEM Fasco blower in many Gelco inserts runs at a fixed, relatively high RPM and starts humming or grinding after roughly 10,000 hours of runtime. Fairfield homeowners often notice it first in January when the unit runs continuously. We stock the Fasco replacement and a quieter Ball bearing upgrade. The upgrade costs about $40 more in parts but runs cooler and lasts roughly 40% longer in our experience.
  • B-vent gas fireplaces: draft inducer corrosion. Gelco’s B-vent units in Fairfield’s older Greenfield Hill and Stratfield homes sometimes show rust on the draft hood or inducer housing from decades of condensation, especially where the vent run has a long horizontal section through an unconditioned attic. We replace the inducer with a stainless-steel equivalent from Famco, re-pitch the vent run to drain properly, and install a condensate trap if the geometry allows. This prevents the repeat failure we’d otherwise see in two or three winters.
  • Gelco damper assemblies: warped cast-iron frames. The throat dampers in Gelco’s wood-burning units can warp from over-firing or from homeowners leaving them partially closed during gas log operation. A warped damper doesn’t seal, which means heated air escapes up the flue year-round. We measure the frame distortion with a straightedge; if it’s under 3/16 inch out of flat, we lap the sealing surface and install a stainless seal kit. Beyond that, we replace with a Gelco OEM damper or a Lock-Top energy-sealing damper for better seasonal performance.

Our Gelco Fireplace Services Process

  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, confirms your Gelco model if you have it, and notes any symptoms. We book a two-hour arrival window and send a photo of your technician beforehand.
  2. 2
Arrival and inspection. Our technician arrives in uniform, lays down floor protection, and begins with a Level-2 camera inspection of the firebox, venting, and surrounding structure. You see the images on a tablet as we find them.
  3. 3
Diagnosis and plain-English verdict. We explain what’s wrong, what caused it, and what happens if you do nothing. For Gelco units, we specify whether the fix requires OEM parts, whether quality aftermarket will serve, and what the warranty implications are either way.
  4. 4
Upfront pricing and approval. You get a written estimate with one number. That’s the number on the invoice. No add-ons, no “while we’re here” surprises.
  5. 5
Repair and testing. We complete most Gelco repairs in the same visit. Gas pressure gets checked with a manometer, combustion is verified with a digital analyzer, and the unit runs through a full heat cycle before we pack up.
  6. 6
Cleanup, documentation, and guarantee. We leave the work area cleaner than we found it. You receive photos from the inspection, the written estimate, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we don’t leave - and if something shows up after, we come back. In writing, no arguing.

Why Fairfield Homeowners Call Hearthstone Chimney Co. for Gelco Work

Fairfield homeowners have called us for Gelco service since the early 1990s, when Gelco units first appeared in the colonial renovations along Greenfield Hill. We’ve learned their failure modes by fixing them, not by reading bulletins.

Our 90-Day Done Right Promise means if a repair fails, we make it right. In writing, no arguing. Our technicians are background-checked, uniformed, and carry common Gelco parts plus backup materials from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and our other trusted brands. Most jobs finish in one visit because we stock what breaks.

Russell Haines and his crew have been in Fairfield long enough to know which Gelco units were installed by which builders, and which corners those builders tended to cut. That history matters when you’re diagnosing a problem that didn’t start yesterday.
